Virtual Server R2 Enterprise Edition is even cheaper for about 7 months
Bink had a note from Redmond Magazine indicating the following:
Microsoft already started an aggressive marketing launch for Virtual Server 2005 R2 annoncing a pricelist of $199 for Enterprise Edition and $99 for Standard Edition.
Now they go even further launching a new promotion, valid till 30th June, for having Virtual Server 2005 R2 Enterprise Edition at $99, as reported by Redmondmag.com.
Wow.
I cannot imagine why someone would not take advantage of this unless they have very specific technical requirements that justify the much more expensive VMWare server products. Thinking about our current customers, not a single one can remotely justify the amount of cost involved in VMWare given the technical merits of that product over Virtual Server. (If you have 200 employees, and you're looking to virtualize to save some hardware or support Windows NT 4.0, there's absolutely no need for VMotion, for example!)
